The global campaign Publish What You Fund has just released the Aid Transparency Index 2022. New Zealand Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) has been ranked #26 out of 50 aid donors.
Key recommendations for MFAT:
- New Zealand-MFAT should build on its transparency improvements made in 2020 and continue to publish performance related data such as reviews and evaluations, and results.
- MFAT should improve its publication of project financial and budgetary data to include project budget documents and full disaggregated organisational budgets.
- It should look to publish regular and updated contractual information for the activities and organisations which it contracts.
Key overall findings:
Aid organisations have largely maintained their transparency at pre-pandemic levels. The overall picture of the 2022 Index results is broadly similar to the 2020 Index. The average score has dipped slightly (61.8 in 2022, compared with 63.4 in 2020). This year 31 of the 50 organisations that were assessed scored in the ‘good’ or ‘very good’ index categories, meaning they are consistently publishing high-quality aid data.
