It has been announced that women will no longer be permitted to work at the UN in Afghanistan, a measure that will be actively enforced by the Taliban.
At the end of last year, the Taliban prohibited women from working for both national and international NGOs which impacted the delivery of much needed humanitarian aid in the country. The UN says this most recent action further inhibits the organisation’s ability to reach vulnerable communities, especially women.
The announcement has been condemned by the international community and the UN. Roza Otunbayeva, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, stated “this decision represents an assault against women, the fundamental principles of the UN, and on international law.”
