Celebrating Maternal Mental Health Day

Posted on 03 May 2023

May 3 marks World Maternal Mental Health Day, which aims to raise awareness, and change policy and attitude, around women's mental health before and after childbirth. In many countries, up to 1 in 5 mothers experience some kind of perinatal illness that can have major and long term effects on mother and child alike.

On this day, UnionAID are drawing our attention to Indonesian activist and INSPIRASI participant Nurul Inayah (Naya), who advocates for the improved emotional wellbeing of mothers in her nation. The topic is not widely accepted or spoken about in Indonesia, and through her innovative action project she sparked a conversation about postpartum depression and maternal mental health more broadly. Today should act as a celebration of activists like Naya who are opening up the dialogue to incite positive change for women globally.
