Across Europe as Covid continues and the crisis in the Ukraine increases, we are seeing an increase in military budgets, often resulting in a decrease in other areas, including at the expense of the aid budgets.
Germany, Belgium, Romania, Italy, Poland, Norway and Sweden have all pledged to increase defense spending since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Recently, the draft budget for Germany sees the budget of Germany's Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, shrink to €10.8 billion – while the defense budget is set to increase to over €50 billion. This will result in a cut to its contribution to the World Food Programme by 50% to €28 million.
