Digital development deepening aid inequalities

As digital technologies continue to evolve in humanitarian assistance, concerns over the exclusion of those living in humanitarian crises from digital platforms have been raised. Senior research officer John Bryant emphasizes the importance of populations set to use humanitarian technologies having a say in their design, as to maximize technological efficiency in the humanitarian sector.

A recent biometric system introduced in Jordan for Syrian refugees highlighted the need for greater attention on the users of the system. The intention for the biometric system to give authenticity to cash assistance has been undermined, with those with disabilities and older generations struggling to use the new technology.
