Economic breakdown in Sri Lanka risks humanitarian crisis

Posted on 05 July 2022

Sri Lanka’s economy has been described as in a ‘state of collapse’, as Sri Lankan citizens struggle to buy basic food and fuel necessities amid political unrest and violence. The crisis has been caused by economic mismanagement alongside the impact of the Covid pandemic on Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

The government has implemented fuel-saving measures such as closing urban schools and universities as well as reducing civil servant hours, however in other areas such as food inflation is high at 57% which sees many Sri Lankans relying on government rice handouts and charitable donations. Protests have erupted in Sri Lanka demanding political accountability.
