Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand (CANZ) is the Catholic Bishops’ agency for justice, peace and development. We work in partnership and solidarity with communities throughout the world to promote human dignity and the common good. Our work of hope tackles both the causes and effects of poverty and injustice and responds swiftly to human and natural disasters. We promote advocacy and education for justice in New Zealand and Oceania, and we play an integral part in the worldwide Caritas network of over 160 relief, development, and social service organisations. We are part of the Oceania Caritas network who collaborate on issues within our region as well as the Caritas Internationalis global network.

Reporting to the Chief Executive (CE) and as an integral member of the management team, the purpose of the Pouwhakahaere- Chief Operating Officer (COO) is to oversee and optimise the day-to-day operations of the organisation and drive operational excellence. The COO will lead process and system optimisation and improvements as well as, the efficient and effective delivery of finance and business services activities aligned to the strategic objectives. The COO will be responsible for developing and executing finance and business services strategies, in close consultation with the Chief Executive, to ensure sustainable growth and foster a culture of continuous improvement. 

Key responsibilities

  • Stategic leadership – develop and execute operational stategies aligned to the mission and strategic priorities
  • Strategic financial stewardship – budgeting and ensuring financial sustanability
  • Governance and stakeholder reporting
  • Operational excellence – innovation, process and continuous improvement 
  • Performance impact – monitor and evaluate performance
  • Audit, risk and assurance – policy and regulatory compliance
  • ICT management – technology, digitisation and automation
  • HR management-  systems, process and policy 
  • Payroll management
  • Health, safety and wellbeing (HSW) management
  • Procurement, supplier and contract management
  • Property and facilities management
  • Operations and office administration services
  • Enabling the work of CANZ identifying funding and fundrasing sources and mobilising resources to meet CANZ revenue requirements.

We are seeking an individual with substantial experience in senior leadership roles with demonstrated strategic leadership and operational management of finance, operations, business services combined with a passion to make a difference for the most vulnerable. Strong leadership skills are essential. This includes the ability to motivate and inspire teams, make strategic decisions, and drive organisational performance. The ideal applicant will hold a relevant tertiary qualification in accountancy, finance or business management and preference for  membership to an appropriate professional body e.g. Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. 

An understanding and alignment with the mission of Caritas is advantageous, as is an awareness of the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori. Experience working with international and/or Pacific nations is preferable.
