The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum has become a beacon of hope and action, as young leaders from across the globe convene at the UN Headquarters in New York. This three-day event, which began on Tuesday, 16th April, is a vibrant platform for youth to engage in meaningful dialogue with international diplomats, addressing challenges that impact their future and well-being. The forum’s discussions are laser-focused on five critical Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): ending poverty, achieving zero hunger, taking climate action, ensuring peace, justice, and strong institutions, and fostering partnerships to realize these goals. These discussions will be instrumental in shaping the agenda for the ECOSOC’s High-Level Political Forum in July.
In her opening remarks, ECOSOC’s president, Paula Narváez, expressed her unwavering faith in the world’s youth, whose enthusiasm and determination are essential for crafting a more inclusive future. She poignantly referred to the ideals of the young as “the music of humankind,” a melody of hope for better days ahead. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the infectious energy and conviction of young people, which are more vital than ever in a world rife with challenges. Guterres reaffirmed his commitment to integrating young voices into political decision-making, not just as passive listeners but as active contributors whose insights lead to tangible actions.
