The European Union has announced that it will be providing €100,000 (over US$105 000) in funding to assist Micronesia in drought preparedness activities.
There is a severe drought forecasted in Micronesia due to the El Nino weather phenomenon, which is and will continue to have varying and severe impacts on the Pacific region. This drought in the nation is thought to last from October 2023 - June 2024, peaking in January, and will consist of rainfall 50-60% less than average.
This funding will be supporting the Micronesia Red Cross Society in its aid efforts that aim to reach and benefit more than 6,500 people.
