With the global focus on the Ukraine, there has been some media commentary about other long-term yet ‘forgotten’ crises elsewhere in the world. The New Humanitarian has listed eight conflicts and crises that are also happening right now, including:
- Myanmar with 14.4 million people in need of aid,
- Afghanistan with 22.1 million people targeted for aid
- The Sahel with 14.7 million needing aid across Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger
The Russia-Ukraine conflict, and growing refugee crisis, is also considered by some media observers to be exposing a stark media bias in how conflicts are reported. Foreign Correspondence, Ayman Mohyeldin states that “current western media might have you convinced that war only happens in other countries – ones that are not white”. At the same time, the New York-based Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association has issued a statement condemning the "pervasive mentality in Western journalism of normalizing tragedy" in places like the Middle East.
