It has been announced that a French Embassy will be opening in Apia, the first in the Polynesian region.
France and Samoa have released a joint statement expressing that after decades of diplomatic relations, the opening of the embassy will help to continue to strengthen the relationship between Samoa and French territories in the Pacific. They express mutual cooperation in “favour of peace, security, the fight against climate change and the preservation of biodiversity in the Pacific and around the world.”
The South Pacific Regional Environment Programme is also based in Apia, and so the establishment of the embassy will allow for increased French engagement with this programme.
