There is also significant concern over the numbers fleeing to neighbouring Chad, which already hosts 400,000 refugees from the nation. In the days following the initial conflict, around 10,000 – 20,000 people made the trip across the border, and the influx is causing significant strain on the country’s already limited resources.
Raouf Mazou, UNCHR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, says “We reiterate our call for all parties to protect civilians, including refugees and displaced people, and to respect the safety of humanitarian staff so that critical aid can be delivered.”
