Following a devastating magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Papua New Guinea, the loss of at least five lives has been reported, with the death toll anticipated to rise as rescue operations persist. The earthquake, which occurred near the Sepik River, has severely impacted the East Sepik province, prompting the declaration of a State of Emergency. Governor Allan Bird has confirmed the grim outlook, acknowledging that the number of casualties is likely to increase as more remote areas are reached.
The affected communities, already grappling with the consequences of widespread flooding earlier in March, now face the loss of approximately 1000 homes. The most urgent needs identified by Governor Bird include tarpaulins for temporary shelters, clean drinking water, filters, and food. As the province assesses the extent of the damage, international partners are awaited to join the relief efforts. The resilience of the East Sepik people is being tested as they manage the situation, with hopes for support and recovery in the days to come.
