Statement on the Ceasefire in Gaza

Posted on 16 January 2025

The Council for International Development Aotearoa New Zealand welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza, marking a critical step towards ending the immediate violence that has devastated the region over the past 15 months. Since the onset of hostilities, it is estimated that over 46,000 lives have been lost, with the majority of those killed being women and children (AP News). The conflict has displaced approximately 1.9 million people, leaving 90% of Gaza's population in dire need of humanitarian assistance (AP News). Vital infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and water systems, has suffered extensive destruction, with damages estimated at $18.5 billion (World Bank).
While this ceasefire offers a moment of relief, it is not the end of the suffering endured by millions in the region. Rather, it signals the beginning of a long journey to recovery and peace. The urgent need to deliver humanitarian aid and begin the extensive work of rebuilding shattered communities remains as critical as ever.
CID, speaking on behalf of New Zealand’s international development sector, calls on the New Zealand Government to use whatever influence it has on the international stage to ensure that this fragile ceasefire is upheld and that pathways to sustained peace are prioritized. The protection of civilians and unhindered access for humanitarian workers must be guaranteed to address the profound and ongoing humanitarian needs.
The horror of this conflict underscores the necessity for global collaboration in support of recovery and rebuilding efforts, as well as the imperative to prevent future violence. We urge all parties to uphold their commitments and work towards a durable and just peace for all affected communities.
