The Council for International Development Aotearoa New Zealand is compiling a list of appeals from its member organisations and partner agencies to support those affected by the recent devastating earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. These appeals provide a trusted avenue for New Zealanders to contribute to urgent relief and recovery efforts.
Myanmar and Thailand were struck by a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday, 28 March, triggering widespread devastation and a series of strong aftershocks. The impact continues to unfold, with the death toll tragically rising to over 1,700 and more than 3,400 injuries reported, according to Myanmar state media and corroborated by ReliefWeb.
Critical infrastructure across central Myanmar has been severely affected, including roads, bridges, and airfields. Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw airports remain closed, making Yangon the primary entry point for international responders. While parts of the main highway have reopened, travel to affected areas remains challenging. Communities are in dire need of immediate assistance.
More than 70 aftershocks have been recorded since the main earthquake, including a magnitude 5.1 tremor near Mandalay on 30 March, adding to distress and complicating ongoing rescue efforts. The United States Geological Survey has warned that fatalities could potentially exceed 10,000 as the full scale of the disaster emerges. In response to this immense tragedy, Myanmar’s military government has issued an urgent plea for international assistance.
Each CID member organisation and its partners listed are actively working on the ground or through local networks to provide critical support, including food, shelter, and healthcare for those most affected.
