In Samoa, a reported shortage of teachers is allegedly prompting senior students to assume teaching roles. Member of Parliament Fuaava Suluimālō Amataga raised concerns, citing parents' complaints about Year 7 and Year 8 students teaching Year 1 and Year 2. Despite the Minister of Education denying the claim, he acknowledged a chronic shortage of teachers and outlined plans to address the issue. Some officials argue that the problem lies not in a shortage but in the unattractive salary package for the teaching profession.
In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Toesulusulu Cedric Schuster, Member of Parliament and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, recognized the persistent teacher shortage, emphasizing the need for alternative solutions. He suggested the possibility of involving community members to assist with classes but emphasized the necessity of approval from the Ministry of Education.
