Last week, United Nations agencies in the Philippines established an ongoing Anticipatory Action (AA) Programme, aiming to protect at risk communities from typhoons before they hit.
More typhoons enter the Philippines’ area of responsibility than anywhere else in the world, an average of 20 per year. Eight to nine typhoons cross the nation itself every year.
The newly established programme will provide cash assistance and other means of support to over half a million people. The initiatives will prioritise the health and protection of women and girls before and during these emergencies, including a focus on gender-based violence and reproductive health.
