UN approved security mission to combat gang violence in Haiti

Posted on 05 October 2023

On October 2, the UN Security Council adopted what has been described as a historic resolution - authorising the deployment of a security mission to Haiti as a peace restoration attempt in the nation. The mission is being led by Kenya, who will be assisted by other Caribbean nations.

2023 has seen the severe escalation of gang violence in the Haiti. It is estimated 5.2 million people require humanitarian assistance, with 3,000 having been killed as a result of gang violence this year.

This mission was called for by the Haitan Government and members of civil society, and 13 out of the 15-member council voted for the mission, with only Russia and China abstaining.

Jean Victor Geneus, Foreign Minister of Haiti, describes the vote as an “expression of solidarity with a population in distress” and “a glimmer of hope for the people that have for too long been suffering."
