In response to the ongoing Rohingya humanitarian crisis affecting 1.3 million people in Bangladesh, UN humanitarian agencies have launched an appeal for $852.4 million to support refugees and the host communities. The 2024 Joint Response Plan, led by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), aims to alleviate the plight of approximately one million Rohingya refugees residing in densely-populated camps in Cox’s Bazar and on the island of Bhasan Char. These refugees fled ethnic violence in neighboring Myanmar back in August 2017. Despite the passage of almost seven years, the needs remain as grave and urgent as ever, and this appeal also seeks to assist around 346,000 people in the host communities. The situation demands an all-hands-on-deck humanitarian response, with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) playing a pivotal role in ensuring that basic necessities, especially food, are provided to those affected.
