The UN Security Council held their first ever debate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) last week, with a focus on how AI presents both “opportunities and risks for international peace and security.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke at the New York meeting on how the rapid rise in this technology is raising “political, legal, ethical and humanitarian concerns.”
Guterres is urging nations to address the complex challenge of AI governance, calling on regulation by member states and also suggesting the formation of a new UN entity to support this governance. “We must work together for AI that bridges social, digital and economic divides, not one that pushes us further apart”, he says.
The latest episode of Chatham House’s Independent Thinking podcast responds to the meeting and focuses on the challenges AI poses – in particular its threat to global democracy. Listen to the episode here
