Unspeakable Conditions in Gaza: UNRWA Reports One Million Flee Rafah

Posted on 12 June 2024

The United Nations aid agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has reported a mass exodus from Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. Daily bombardments by the Israeli military have led to the displacement of one million people over the past eight months. These displaced families are now seeking shelter in Khan Younis, where they face 'unspeakable' living conditions. The lack of basic necessities such as menstrual hygiene kits, privacy, and drinking water has exacerbated the dire situation.

In response to the escalating crisis, US President Joe Biden has proposed a ceasefire plan. This plan includes a phased end to the war, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from built-up areas, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and a comprehensive plan for Gaza's reconstruction. Meanwhile, top human rights experts have urged all countries to recognise the State of Palestine, echoing the sentiments of 146 UN Member States. They argue that full self-determination for Palestine, including the right to exist, is a precondition for lasting peace in the region.
